Poll: Worst President Ever?

I tried to narrow the list down to the major contenders for this dishonor, we haven't had a new poll on the front page for a while so I thought I'd throw one up on the diaries. I really wish Kerry would have won... ah well, the people are getting what they deserve.

I tried to narrow the list down to the major contenders for this dishonor

Got a good laugh when I saw the results of your list narrowing.

I'm a member in good standing (none / 0)

of the Lou Dobbs school of polling.

He's just closed the deal (none / 0)

Before Katrina, I would have named GWB the worst ever,
but I would have had to respect an argument for Pierce
or Buchanan on the grounds that they were responsible
for the Civil War.  After all, GWB has not yet caused a
civil war.  With martial law in a major city, though, this
objection has much less weight.  If he had any self-respect
he'd resign.

I think it's a duh (none / 0)

Although McKinley gets an honorable mention.

Incompetent "Leadership" (none / 0)

I believe that George W. Bush will go down in history at the president of the United States that most negatively impacted the world and the country.

Can you edit the poll? (none / 0)

I don't know if the capability of editing polls even exists, but it'd be nice if we could list Buchanan, Grant, Harding, and maybe a few of the other rogues' gallery members (Pierce, JQ Adams, maybe Coolidge). (Thanks to Curt's deconstruction, I understand there's a subtle joke in there, but it'd be a more interesting poll with more options...)

Mangled Katrina response notwithstanding, Buchanan still gets my vote. But it kind of begs the question, which is worse: being corrupt, indecisive and incompetent (Buchanan), corrupt and decisively incompetent (Bush), corrupt and in a drunken haze (Grant), or just constantly asleep (Pierce, Coolidge)?

If you make a poll (none / 0)

I'd be happy to vote in it.

Actually, (none / 0)

I was thinking of a new poll: Who is worse? Commodus or George W. Bush?

Re: Actually, (none / 0)

We'd need to expand that poll too. Commodus would have competition from Nero, Caligula, Claudius, and Heliogabalus.

Warren Harding, anyone? (none / 0)

Nah, he was as corrupt as they come, but did no major damage during his relatively brief term in office.

Richard Nixon?  IMO, he would have gone down as a "near great" president if not for that little ethical problem.

Jimmy Carter?  Yeah, I know, this is a liberal board.  I don't care.  He was still a poor president.  OTOH, he is among the most honest and decent men ever to hold the office.

Andrew Johnson?  We'll never know.  He was hamstrung by the radicals who wanted to punish the south.

Millard Fillmore?  The very definition of mediocrity, but nothing terrible.  Also applies to Gerald Ford, George Bush the elder, and others.

Yep, it's official.  GWB is the worst president in American history.
